Greece Append Police Issued ID to Existing COVID Free Wallet

The Greek Digital Governance Ministry activated the refurbished “Covid Free Wallet,” an online application cum mobile app that makes it easier for citizens to present their coronavirus vaccination or recovery certificates and identity details when seeking admission to retail stores, restaurants, and cafes, gyms and other leisure or entertainment venues.

The “Covid Free GR” app for mobile phones and tablets aims to make it easier for citizens to display proof of immunity when entering a store or an indoor venue that does not cater to unvaccinated patrons.
Elements of the Greek police identity card have been newly incorporated into the application to verify the holder’s identity of a vaccination certificate.

Speaking to Parliament on Wednesday, December 22, Deputy Digital Governance Minister Theodoros Livanios had said that the personal details stored in the Covid Free app would be the photograph, the name and date of birth.

“We noticed some difficulties in the inspection of certificates, as citizens also had to have their identity card with them to confirm the match. So, to serve them, while also protecting their privacy, we basically introduced a section of the police-issued ID that contains only the [holder’s] photograph, full name and date of birth. As of today, this is embodied in the certificate. One page will show the certificate and the other the identification data,”

Deputy Minister Giorgos Georgantas told state broadcaster ERT.

At the beginning of November, Greece had launched the Covid Free Gr Wallet, an app allowing citizens to easily save Greek and European Covid-19 certificates on their mobile phones and tablet devices.

The app aims to facilitate the storage of digital health certificates for vaccination, recovery, and testing and simplify verification procedures.

Storage is possible both for the EU Digital Covid Certificate and national certificates and for as many people the user wants – for example, the whole family.

The app is similar to other digital tools already used by citizens to store and verify documents, including air boarding passes and event tickets.

Users can save their documents on the Covid Free Gr Wallet simply by scanning their QR code or uploading them in a pdf format.

The free app is available for download on smartphones and tablets at the covidfree.gov.gr website and through the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Users can activate the document on their device by scanning their certificate’s QR code or downloading it as a PDF and clicking “Save to wallet.” They also have to draw their ID details from the system using their Taxisnet codes.
