The Mississippi Department of Safety (DPS), on 20th November 2021, launched a mobile application for the citizens to digitally store their driver’s license and other Identity cards. Citizens could use the mobile app to show the ID anywhere to access state services.
The Department was working with IDEMIA, a biometric and identity solution provider, to create Mississippi Mobile ID that allows citizens to show up-to-date driver’s license and IDs on their phones and use it as a legal ID. The application ensures data security and privacy by only storing personal information on the state’s record system and the user’s device.
It shares only specific user information instead of sharing all the data on the driver’s license. For example, for services requiring age and name details, the application will only display these and block the other information from revealing.
The application uses a password or phone’s internal fingerprint or face authentication capabilities to unlock and display the digital ID. After downloading the application, users set permissions and verify their phone numbers. Post which, they scan the front and back of their driver’s license and take a selfie for verification. Once the State Department of Motor Vehicles verifies these details, the user can access the digital ID instead of the physical one.
This verification will help reduce fraud, streamline processes and improve the resident experience. It also assures the verifiers that the IDs they are receiving are authentic and up-to-date, as any changes in the ID will get updated on the application.
Mississippi is the fourth state to use IDEMIA’s mobile ID technology. The states like Iowa, Virginia, Maryland, Louisiana, Arizona, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Delaware have been using similar platforms for digital driver’s licenses.
