ID.me and Sterling to Offer In-Person Identity Verification for Gov Services

A partnership between ID.me, a biometric verification company, and Sterling identity, an operator of Sterling Check, a background check specialist, will make New Jersey the first state to offer a secure in-person identity verification to create a login for government services.

The service will be readily available through retail settings and can be used to create a login ID. Once the ID is created, it can be used to access government services and obtain unemployment benefits.

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) will use the service to improve equity and access to online services provision by helping those without technology or digital skills to navigate an otherwise online onboarding system. The Internal Revenue Services verification process has already been updated by ID.me, allowing more people to verify their identity to access services like Child Tax Credits.

This move is to counter identity fraud that has increased during recent times. According to the Federal Trade Commission, there has been a 3000 percent increase in identity fraud for welfare claims during the pandemic. This move will help resolve these issues through the government agencies.
