DigiLocker

Indian State of Tamil Nadu to Use DigiLocker System

All government departments of Indian State Tamil Nadu and their subordinate agencies will soon be adopting DigiLocker System to provide the citizens access to digital documents as envisaged in the Information Technology (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries Providing Digital Locker Facilities) Rules, 2016. This is part of the flagship initiative by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology promoting the vision of paperless governance.

The system will provide a digital wallet to every citizen enabling them to access all documents electronically in one place. The Information Technology Secretary Neeraj Mittal said that the documents in DigiLocker will be considered on par with the original physical document.

The Tamil Nadu E-governance will help government departments/ statutory authorities/ PSUs/ autonomous bodies/ agencies/ universities and educational institutions adopt DigiLocker. To implement the system, all government departments will have to integrate their software applications with DigiLocker and register themselves as issuer or requestor or as both as required.

The agencies registered as issuers can directly issue or provide documents or certificates on DigiLocker. Similarly, agencies registered as requesters with integrated software will enable citizens to fetch supporting documents required for various online applications directly from the DigiLocker.

The government departments have already been notified to integrate their current software with DigiLocker to issue and verify certificates and ensure that certificates that are already issued and the ones that will be issued in the future are all available on the DigiLocker Platform.
