Uganda hosts “Bold Digital Government” Expo

National Information Technology Authority, Uganda (NITA-Uganda) hosted a successful E-Government Excellence Expo at the Garden city Rooftop under the theme “Bold Digital Government”, Disruptive technologies.

Dr Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, opened the event that attracted nearly 30 exhibitors.

At the expo, she noted that E-Government improves accessibility and eliminates barriers to accessing public services by reducing discrimination and promoting inclusion and efficiency of service delivery.

It presented a unique platform where ministries, departments and agencies had an opportunity to engage with clients and share their service delivery experience and their advancement in leveraging technology. 

The event was also graced by Moses Magogo, Chairperson of the ICT parliament committee.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director at the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda said that the exhibition would help to facilitate access to online services for citizens and encourage people from all walks of life to come and use the existing e-services.

In his remarks about the subsequent webinars at the expo on new technology, he remarked that disruptive technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things could facilitate economic recovery and growth in Uganda.

About some of the digital Projects Showcased:

Airco: Using Artificial Intelligence to monitor air pollution through low-cost air quality monitors and providing real-time air quality information. Previously it was difficult to quantify the scale of air pollution in Uganda due to scarcity of data, but today you can instantly access this data through their digital platforms, Monitor the patterns of air quality and make evidence-based decisions.

National Building Review Board developed a Building Industry Management System. Before, a developer would take months to identify a building professional. With the system, a developer logs onto http://bims.go.ug for all Building approvals.

URA: Improved efficiencies in tax administration by adding to the URA App. The Authority is now on WhatsApp, making it more convenient for citizens no Interact and engage on tax issues. Admin No. is +256772140000

National Medical Stores: Through the CSSP system, NMS received on average 87% orders of medical supplies. NMS used to receive approximately 30% of orders for medical supplies before the system was commissioned. Previously, government health facilities ordered medicines from NMS using paper-based systems, which were not only tedious but prone to delays.
