IRS Shares Security Tips for Tax Professionals in the US

The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and its Security Summit partner have provided a guide for tax professionals keeping in mind the upcoming tax filing season. They have also asked them to use the Taxes Security Together Checklist to identify preventive measures to safeguard their client and business details.

The IRS has asked tax professionals to use multi-factor authentication to protect their tax accounts. The organization has asked them to search and use authentication apps instead of directly accessing codes on email or text.

The tax professionals have been asked to use private networks to protect remote sites and prevent the takeover by cyber thieves. The IRS has suggested consulting with cybersecurity experts and using legitimate vendors for their VPN connection. They also warned users not to click on pop-up security product advertisements as they generally are scams.

The IRS also included tips to avoid phishing scams and attempts to steal EFINs. They also reminded tax professionals that the federal law requires them to have written information security plans. The tax professionals were suggested to have an emergency response plan in case they experience a data theft.
