The Japanese government is planning to recruit 2.3 million people with digital expertise over the next five years in an initiative to expand digital technologies in rural regions. Government officials drew this initiative at a meeting with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on 28th December 2021.
The plan is to revitalize local economies by closing the digital gap in the rural regions. It also specifies that the government will build digital infrastructures like 5G networks and undersea cables, promote digitization in healthcare, education, and disaster management and improve convenience in mountainous areas.
The government plans to begin the recruitment from the next fiscal year. It also plans to dispatch people who play vital roles in community-building efforts using digital technology to 100 areas across the country.
In the meeting, the Prime Minister said that the government will set aside 50 billion dollars for the initiative in a supplementary budget for this fiscal year and the initial budget plan for the year 2022.
