NYC Tests Filecoin for File Storage Safety and Reliability

New York City, US with Protocol Labs, an open-source development and deployment laboratory, and the Filecoin Foundation will test decentralized web by uploading and storing open data on demographics, air quality, and legal notices on Filecoin, an open-source, decentralized file storage network at no cost for at least the next five years.

Filecoin Foundation and Protocol Labs identified and downloaded datasets and uploaded them to the network through Estuary, open-source software that allows public data to be sent to Filecoin and retrieved anywhere. The data will be available at NYC Open Data’s website, Estuary, Filecoin, and InterPlanetary File system, a peer-to-peer network.

A benefit of this test run is that there is no need for any behavior change by users of NYC Open Data. The experiment doesn’t remove any data but copies it and stores it on a decentralized web allowing the city to A/B test the impact on costs, completeness, redundancy, and data access latency. This will add a new, more secure, more robust way to store important datasets.

The Filecoin Foundation is an independent organization supporting the Filecoin network and promoting the growth of the decentralized web, also known as dWeb or Web3. The decentralized web is a concept of reorganizing the web so that rather than having most of your data managed by private servers that major companies like Amazon and Google operate, your data is stored and managed using other computing resources like mobile devices.
