India to Have Single Sign-In to Access Government Services

The Indian Central government plans to launch a digital platform where citizens need to log in once to access a range of government services from this common platform. The platform is intended to be launched in August 2022.

The single sign-on (SSO) service will allow the citizens to log in to multiple platforms or websites using a single set of credentials via safe and secure user authentication. The identification and authentication can be done using government IDs, email, or mobile numbers. This will reduce the need to have multiple login IDs and passwords to avail of different government services from the central and state governments.

The rollout of the national citizen-centric portal and creating a National Digital Profile for all citizens would help pre-fill government forms. The citizens would also be able to use it as a tool to discover the welfare schemes and benefits offered by the governments.

The government is also working on a plan to have a provision where the citizens that are logged in can view details of the services and entitlements that they can easily access. To fasten the launch process, the Electronics and IT Ministry held a meeting with all the ministers and state representatives on onboarding all citizen services offered by both the central and the state governments.
