Oiltanking GmbH Group and Mabanaft Group, involved in storing and supplying oil and other materials, said on 1st February 2022 that they might have been hit by a cyberattack that impacted Germany operations. They discovered the cyber incident on Saturday and launched an investigation with external specialists.
They confirmed the cyberattack through an email statement and have not elaborated on the nature of the incident or the details of who might be responsible for the same. The companies said that they are working to restore operations to normal.
At a conference, the head of Germany’s IT Security Agency, Arne Schoenbohm, said that the attack was serious but not grave. He said that 233 filling stations, mainly in Northern Germany, had been affected, constituting only 1.7% of the country’s total. He also added that in some of these stations, payments through credit cards could not be made, and the prices cannot be adjusted, and in some stations, payment through cash is possible.
