Indian City to Use AI for Cleanliness Drive

Municipal Corporation of the Indian city of Pune (PMC), plans to resolve some civic issues they are facing using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The civic body plans to use the latest digital technologies like data analytics, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning (ML), satellite imagery, and e-governance to check property tax, illegal constructions, etc.

The pilot project aims to capitalize on the use of  AI and machine learning to reduce human involvement in the collection and disposal of garbage. An estimated One Crore Rupees (Rs 10 Million) has been set aside for the project. The civic administration will also be using mechanised sweeping machines for vulnerable spots.

Mitigation programmes would be carried out after chronic sites are identified using technology. Software has been developed for keeping a watch on garbage disposal, according to the city spokesperson. The spots identified using satellite images would be cross-verified by staffers. The Pune Civic Administration has carried out a pilot project for cleanliness at Yerawada. The civic body has identified 150 public spots where dumping of garbage is unrestrained.
