UK Government to Launch gov.uk App to Access Services

Cabinet Office Minister of UK, Steve Barclay, announced that they are launching a gov.uk app as part of government plans to consolidate citizen access to government services. He was speaking at a GovTech summit held in London on 13 October 2021.

Mr Marclay said that the app improved the previous set-up and provided a better user experience, streamlining the multiple online processes to access services. According to him, there were 191 different ways people set up accounts to access services through the gov.uk website with 44 different sign-in methods. With the introduction of this app, everything can be done in one place using a single login.

The Government Digital Services (GDS) were consistently having an anti-app stance. But the sharp increase in downloads of the NHS app and the Covid-19 contact-tracing app has pushed the government towards a single identity project. The government developed the gov.uk app according to robust data protection principles to enable citizens to stay in control of their data.

The GDS will work with all the government departments to add as many services as possible to this platform in future. At the GovTech Summit, Steve Barclay announced the members of a new digital board created to accelerate digital change across government and give advice to ministers on digital-related matters.
