NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Ltd, the company that helps the Indian government agencies create e-governance infrastructure like issuing PAN cards, managing tax information networks and keeping records for the Central Pension System, has decided to use open-source platforms to enhance their services. Open-source platforms are free for use and can be used by anyone with increased customization.
NSDL will continue with its government focus, but it will also replicate these open-source platforms in healthcare, education, and agriculture. They are already running a pilot at a Mumbai-based Indian Academy of Pediatrics to help doctors use Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to digitize their clinical practice. They have also launched three specialized services in the areas of immunodeficiency, nutrition and cancer.
NSDL uses an open-source platform called Sunbird, licensed by MIT for education, which provides building blocks for learning and human development. They are also exploring an Agri advisory unit trying to see how they can use Sunbird in this sector.
