Data shared by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs of India shows that 11,713 and 9,002 complaints of cyber frauds were reported on the National Consumer Helpline during the financial year 2019-202 and 2020-21, respectively. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrashekhar gave this data in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
In response to a different query, Chandrashekhar said Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which is responsible for suggesting countermeasures to protect computers and networks regularly, reported that a total of 17,560, 24,768, 26, 121, and 25,870 websites were hacked during the years 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 (up to October) respectively.
He also noted that the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) doesn’t maintain any such database. The Law enforcement Agencies at the Center and the State government are responsible for taking appropriate legal action against cybercrime offenders.
Chandrashekhar added that there had been multiple attempts to launch cyber attacks on Indian cyberspace. According to the logs analyzed by CERT-In, the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses appear to originate from countries like Algeria, Brazil, France, China, Germany, North and South Korea, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Russia, Taiwan, USA, and more. These attackers use masquerading techniques and hidden servers to hide the identity of their existing systems.
