As per Government data released on 1st January 2022, nearly 5.89 Crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) were filed on the new e-filing portal of the Indian Income Tax Department by 31st December 2021. Over 45.7% ITRs were filed online using the online ITR form, and the remaining were uploaded using the ITR created from the offline software utilities.
The government also informed that the helpdesk had responded to 16,850 calls and 1,467 chats from taxpayers. The department also reached out to the taxpayers and professionals for assistance through their Twitter handle.
Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj, on 31st December 2021, said that the last date of income tax filing wouldn’t be extended despite the complaints from taxpayers regarding glitches in the portal while filing taxes.
