The National Database and Registration Authority of Pakistan are working to turn computerized national identity cards into digital wallets under the government’s Digital Pakistan vision.
This unique digital ID would help get contactless banking, ease of doing business, financial inclusion, and e-governance initiatives by offering e-KYC (Know Your Customer) and remote identification. It will also ensure public conveniences and end conventional physical ID.
Pakistan already has a mobile app called ‘Pak Identity’ that facilitates applicants of national identity cards through an online portal. The app captures facial recognition, biometric fingerprints, and scanned documents needed to process a person’s ID card.
Mr. Tariq Malik, chief of National Database and Registration Authority, said with the successful testing of Pak Identity with 75,000 overseas Pakistanis, the National Database and Registration Authority will go for a digital wallet.
