The Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra, on 4th February 2022, announced that Transport Canada is publishing a Notice of Intent Part I in the Canada Gazette describing the path forward to implement Enhanced Train Control technologies. These technologies will work as an extra layer of safety in transporting people and goods across the country’s vast railway network.
The driver assists mechanism has been embedded within the Enhanced Train Control technologies at a basic level of functionality, reducing potential human error by alerting crew members of potential danger. At the most advanced level of functionality Enhanced Train Control technologies will stop a train to prevent a collision.
The Notice of Intent talks about implementing Enhanced Train Control technologies based on extensive work conducted with railway and labor representatives. It talks about having the Enhanced Train Control technologies with advanced functionalities in high-risk areas and those with basic functionalities in the low-risk areas.
The Notice of Intent also focuses on the importance of receiving feedback and having future collaborations.
