In a continued push to overhaul its tax processing technology, the Internal Revenue Service contracted robotic intelligence company Ripcord to digitize some of its data.
The pilot program, dubbed the Pilot IRS Solution Challenge, will be run by the agency’s Enterprise Digitalization and Case Management Office, and focus on reducing the amount of paper and manual filing used to process taxes.
Officials will work on moving tax Form 709 from hard copies to digital versions. Form 709 reports asset transfers subject to the federal gift tax or generation-skipping transfer taxes.
According to what Ripcord CEO Sam Fahmy said in a statement to Nextgov, Ripcord technology was purpose-built to deliver on the needs of the Pilot IRS Program. Their engineers have developed a unique combination of technology with digital information management to bring companies, including the IRS, into a new paperless era.
The new technology will digitize new and older records at the IRS, along with other metadata to bolster cybersecurity defenses.
This partnership is the latest IRS contract aimed at modernizing its legacy systems. The agency recently awarded analytics company Brillient to help automate some of its business operations. That contact is valued at a maximum of $70 million.
Providing better online tools to ease the tax filing process is one of the actions outlined in President Joe Biden’s December 2021 executive order, requiring agencies to improve citizen interactions with government services.
