Australia Helps Solomon Islands Launch Digital Governance

E-governance is helping governments digitise their services making administrations more transparent, and accountable. Digitising their services also gives quick access to the citizens

The Government of Australia has approved the request of the Solomon Islands to work with partners to help modernise the Information and Communications Technology systems (ICT) of the Islands. Australian infrastructure is invested behind the recent completion of several upgrades to Government ICT systems in high-speed fibre optic internet cable project, along with the Coral Sea Cable System and cyber security.

Upgrading of both the software and hardware systems ensure government services are available to citizens in a convenient, safe and transparent way. It also ensures that the networks and devices are protected from Cyberattacks or ransomware.

The upgraded ICT was launched on 3rd of November, 2021.  Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury McKinnie Dentana stressed on the need to move forward with commitments under the ICT strategy including enhancing security and infrastructure and expanding IT services into the provinces.

Australia has strong security, development and economic ties with the Solomon Islands. COVID-19 crisis helped accelerate the digital connectivity of the islands. Australia has been supporting Solomon Islands Government ICT Services since 2003. Since 2017, Australia has provided investments for the new ICT Services Building in Lengakiki, the Data Centre, the Five Year ICT Strategic Plan, an ICT Training Lab, Solomon Islands Government Portal and Mobile App and significant upgrades to the IT Service Management System.
