Ireland To Fund Schools To Address Digital Divide

Ireland’s Minister of Education, Norma Foley TD, on 6th December 2021 announced €50 million in grant funding to schools. This is the first of the two ICT projects supporting primary and post-primary schools. The schools in the Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) program will receive double the amount of funding provided to the non-DEIS schools.

The funding was a part of an investment program for the Department of Education in the government’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) approved by the European Council. The funding will be paid directly to the recognized schools in the free education scheme to invest in digital infrastructure to support students at risk of educational disadvantage through the digital divide.

Through the other projects funded by NRRP and the National Broadband Plan Intervention Area implementation and provisions, all primary and post-primary schools will receive high-speed broadband connectivity by early 2023.

According to Minister Foley, the investment by the NRRP will advance the effort to ensure that technology and infrastructure are in place to support teaching and learning in the classroom across all schools and ensure that all learners are included.
